Drinking Age Two decades ago, through the lobbying efforts of mothers against drunk driving (MAAD) the drinking age was changed from eighteen to twenty one. If individual states failed to comply ten percent of federal funding for highways would be forfeited. In 2007, age groups 16-20 and 21-25 were tied for driving under the influence at 28%. Why target the 16-20 year olds? The real solution is not a high drinking age limit. However, there is a purpose for it to start at 18 and that�s the same reason the smoking law is 18. Kids go through high school getting an education on how bad cigarette smoking is. At 18 the government says you have enough knowledge, maturity and responsibility toward the subject to make a decision if you want to smoke. The same goes for alcohol, why is it any different? The government is sending a hypocritical message saying that 18-20 year olds are not responsible or mature enough to engage in alcohol consumption. However, they contradict themselves by allowing 18 year olds to own a credit card, vote, pay taxes, adopt a child, purchase a car, firearm, tob......
