The arrival of the railways during the 1830s coincided with the on going industrialisation of Britain�s economy so by the 1840�s Britain was known as the �workshop of the world� producing over 30% of the world�s global industrial output by 1870. The fact that Britain was the first nation to have an industrial revolution meant that it was ahead of all its rivals in terms of trade and exports. However there is great debate amongst historians about the definition of the term industrial revolution.
