Contexts and concepts �Symbolic Annihilation� is the absence of representation in media. Gaye Tuchman (1978) divided the concept of Symbolic Annihilation into three aspects: omission, trivialisation and condemnation. This term is usually applied to media criticism in the fields of Feminism to describe the ways in which the media promotes stereotypes. Women are generally excluded from high ranked occupational roles and are often reduced to as busy housewives, contented mothers, eager consumers, and as sex objects. For example it would always be a woman who would be in a shopping mall doing the shopping and not a man, another example is the Sun�s page 3. �Beauty myth� which was introduced by Naomi Wolf (1990) this is when the media present a particular physical image of femininity as �normal� body image to have.Wolf (1991) published the book The Beauty Myth; which examines beauty as a demand and as a judgment upon women.
