Comparing The Aneid and The Odyssey Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Virgil's epic, The Aeneid, consciously draws from themes, imagery and plot from the great work of The Odyssey by Homer. While the similarities are important and practically alike, it is clear that Virgil borrowed from Homer only to emphasize on the themes and techniques employed by his predecessor in order to create a crafted work of art. Particularly in the scene of the Underworld, all of the similarities between the two works have slight differences, such as the names that are used for gods, or the description of the places that are ventured to, that allow for Virgil to create a unique poem that builds upon Homer's unique originality. The journeys of Aeneas and Odysseus tell us something about their respective characters. Aeneas' obligation to follow his father's desire leads him on a strange journey. Virgil describes the Underworld as, “In desolate night they walked on through the gloom, through Dis’s homes all void, and empty realms…” (Aeneid VI 9-10). The process of reaching the Underworld for Virgil is ritualized; the right sacrifices must be made, then the Golden Bough must ......
