“Macbeth is about a man whose lust for power led him to betray himself.” Is this an adequate summation of the play? “Macbeth is about a man whose lust for power led him to betray himself.” This is an adequate summation of the play, as through a series of events he betrays his original image as a fierce, loyal, noble and valiant general to become a man hated by all, named a traitor and a butcher. He is a loving and tender husband, with no children but his downfall is his ambition and those who surround him. His imagination and ambition lead him on a journey of evil, in which he himself acknowledges as immoral and selfish. The factors which have led him to betray himself include the prophecy of the wicked sisters, his efficacious wife and his own emotions. He allowed himself to be persuaded and forced into the plot to murder the king. The emotions that nurture the intention of murdering Duncan are ignorance, impatience, ambition and lust. He allows his imagination to refuse the suggestions of his conscience in turn leading to his betrayal of self. Weakness is Macbeth’s downfall as i......
