Kumbh Mela Response after watching Short Cut to Nirvana Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In chapter eight of Bret Wallach’s book on India, he briefly mentions the Hindu Kumbh Mela festival. Recently, in my World Mythology class, I viewed a video, titled Short Cut to Nirvana, regarding the Kumbh Mela. After viewing this video, I realized that this event is probably a huge concern in cultural geography. The mythology behind the Kumbh Mela tells the story of a battle between the gods of good and evil fighting for the nectar of immortality. Supposedly, four drops of the nectar fell at four places in India: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik (Wikipedia). Today, these four cities rotate every twelve years holding the Kumbh Mela in their city, with Prayag being the biggest festival of them all. The purpose of the Hindu spiritual festival is to gather with other devotees and to take a “holy dip” in the three sacred rivers - the Ganges, Yamuna and the Saraswati. It is said that by taking a dip in the rivers, “it is a guarantee release from the cycle of rebirth - literally a short cut to the state of purest bliss... nirvana.” (Short Cut to Nirvana) The Kumbh Mela is ......
