Theoretical Essay: Machiavelli�s ideas of power. Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian political thinker and historical figure at the turning point of the Middle Ages and the Modern World. He composed many important writings such as �The Prince�, which talks of how to gain, maintain and centralize power, and �The Discourses� which is of more use to administrators of the twentieth century (Kirjasto, 2003; and Calhoon, 1969). This essay will analyse the relevance of Machiavelli�s ideas to the theoretical understanding of the operation of power in contemporary organisational settings. This analysis will then be applied to the organisation, �The Ice-Cream Parlour�, where relevant examples will be given to illustrate ideas. The ethical implications of Machiavelli�s ideas will also be taken into account. Although other writers over the years have written about management and power in organisations, it was Machiavelli who produced the most thorough analysis of leadership actions applicable to many types of organisations and so many centuries later, are still more relevant in contempora......
