Thoreaus Walden and Reasons to Go to Woods Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The essay “Walden” by Henry Thoreau emphasizes the importance of self-reliance, solitude, and closeness to nature. He finds all these things through nature, where he decides to live for a while. In the essay Thoreau talks about the reasons why he went to live in the woods as well as why in the end he decides to leave the woods. In the chapter, Where I Lived, and What I Lived For, Thoreau tells the reasons why he decides to live in the woods. He says, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Thoreau is stating that he wants to know life's true meanness and give a true account of it. He doesn’t want to be like men who are uncertain about the meaning of life. He feels that by exploring this new type of scenery he will explore his innerself and learn about it. Thoreau describes the farm and says, “The real attractions of the Hollowell farm, to me, were: its complete retirement…” Forced to simplify his life, he says ......
