In Nathaniel Hawthorne�s story, �Young Goodman Brown� we followed the plot which begun in Salem during the 1800�s. The tale of �Young Goodman Brown� is a classic example of good versus evil. It told the story of a young Puritan man drawn into a covenant with the Devil. Brown is stressed with Puritan doctrine, a doctrine that taught all men are totally corrupt and require constant self-examination to see that they are sinners and unworthy of God�s Grace. The story was set in the forest of Salem, Massachusetts, during the time of the witch trials. The Salem Witch Trials resulted in the hanging deaths of nineteen people accused of being witches. Salem was a Puritan village that appeared to be a good Christian community in the beginning of the story. Hawthorne criticizes the Puritan community or the religious community of his time throughout this tale. In the short story, Hawthorne criticizes the Puritans who take the words of the Bible literally, and who believes they are pure but inside the evil resides just as in the people they persecute.
