Most people in a position of leadership aren't going to be without their mixed motives. Shakespeare's play King Henry V addresses this issue with it's titled character even before the play begins. By taking a look at how King Henry V evolved –– from his youth as "Hal", the wayward son running around with his crowd that was causing "chaos" to his "reformed" persona, a leader who lead his whole country into war –– we can delve into the complexity of King Henry V's character Understanding the context of King Henry V in the first play is vital to understanding what motivates this character. Without prior knowledge, he may appear to be a hypocrite, so into his own falsehoods that he fools himself in his soliloquy. He prays to God not to punish other people for his father's sin of stealing the crown from his cousin Richard, yet Henry V is the one who led his people to war. This lying to oneself makes it seem that he so habitually convinced himself of his own character that he is simply a dishonest person.
