Holden Caulfield is a teenager on the brink of becoming a man. Many teenagers are afraid of becoming of adults, because of the responsibility they will have to face. But, Holden is unwilling to make the plunge, because of the corruption that will overcome him from society. Holden saw what corruption did to his brother, D.B., but he still wants to be pure just like his sister Phoebe. Holden witnesses and experiences many situations that would make anyone afraid of becoming an adult.
One of the earliest experiences of corruption Holden witnesses is the death of his brother, Allie, who was only a child when he died. The thought of someone as pure and young as Allie dead made Holden want to stay young and pure, and afraid of the corruption that will overcome everyone not matter the age or the purity of the person. Holden�s reaction to the tragic event was bizarre for someone his age. Holden �broke all the windows in the garage� (pg. 39) to try to get rid of the pain he was feeling. The only way Holden could get rid of the depression he was facing was breaking all the windows ......
