Gender and context in Seamus Heaney Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Past historical sites and contexts of the Windeby bog girl and the 1800 Act of Union, cultural contexts and above all from his own cultural milieu of ailing 1975 Northern Ireland, have helped to mould and shape Seamus Heaney’s own perceptions and understandings of gender, as evident in his poems “Punishment” and “Act of Union”. Heaney’s representations of gender encompass not only the ways he describes about men and women in his texts, but how he creates and implies the social and cultural expectations of the two sexes, or gives them stereotypical characteristics of masculinity and femininity outside their biological characteristics. He effectively calls on conservative Irish stereotypes of gender as a justification for marginalising women or giving power to men and of gender as a construction of identity. Heaney’s also draws strong cultural influences from Celtic mythology and the extreme state of Heaney’s contemporary Ireland result in the representations of gender in both these texts.
