American English and the internationalization of New Zealand English Ever since technologies such as telegraphs, telephones and movies New Zealand English (NZE) has been exposed to many foreign influences. Most influential by far has been and is to this day the United States. But why is it that the US has such a great influence on our language? And also why is it that we place so much emphasis on how we use English? After America gained independence American scholars encouraged the American public to form and use American English (AE). This is one reason why AE has changed so much from the British Oxford standard (Received Pronunciation). But this is not the only reason their English changed; otherwise, why then is NZE also different from the true British language (RP) when we actually had scholars suggesting we do exactly the opposite, as seen in the documentary �New Zild� by John Milligan.
