Sociological thought attempts to explain issues in terms of interaction between social institutions. Emile Durkheim developed the theory of anomie and used it to explain crime and in particular suicide. In Social Structure and Anomie (1938) Robert King Merton elaborated Durkheim’s theory to explain how America’s cultural goals and the socially constructed means for attaining them can place pressure on certain groups within society, resulting in a higher chance of deviance in those groups. Human behaviour is predictable to some degree even though variables exist such as ideas and attitudes. Without such predictability, human existence would be chaotic, a ‘war of all against all’ in the words of Thomas Hobbes (Newbold 2000: p.9). In order to study deviance it is first necessary to understand social control and its effect on human behaviour. Sociologists look for distinctive deviant behaviour, resulting from the pressure and disorganizing influences from the environment (Orcutt 1983: p.69).
