Post-colonial theory and discourse is essentially concerned with the cultural legacy of colonial rule. It is not one coherent, standardised concept but rather a set of different theories developed by a number of philosophers, writers and anthropologists pertaining to the effects of colonial rule on both the colonisers and the colonised. There are a number of key issues that are explored in post-colonial theory, including hegemony, identity, language, place and superiority. A knowledge and understanding of post-colonial theory and thus the relative significance of these issues allows the reader to identify not only the ways in which David Malouf explores these issues in Remembering Babylon but is also useful in appreciating the fundamental purpose and message of the novel.
