The poems �To His Coy Mistress� by Andrew Marvel and �I wanna be yours� by John Cooper Clarke are both persuasive love poems from different periods of time. �To His Coy Mistress �is a pre 1900 poem written in the 17th century. It is about sexual feelings and infatuation, based on the Italian tradition of courtly love - it is filled with compliments and references to sexual activity and deviancy but is generally a one sided love, the whole poem is about the man wooing the woman and persuading her that she should have sex with him. Marvel was a well educated and well travelled man this is portrayed in his poetry. On the other hand, �I wanna be yours� is an example of a more modern poem written in the 20th century by the poet John Cooper Clarke. He was a performance poet, so his poems are more song like and tended to lack punctuation as they were intended to be performed not read.. Similarly to �To His Coy Mistress�, �I wanna be yours� is also written to persuade a woman. However his intentions and reasoning are not so boldly shown.
