The housing industry for many years has had an impact on the economy both positively and negatively. News and information on new home starts and sales of existing homes have influenced various facets of the economy such as jobs and the stock market. This essay will examine two such factors of the industry, one negative and one positive, affecting the economy. The first will be the effect of news on the stock market and investor confidence. The second will be how news, either good or bad, can help the economy create or lose jobs. The first area discussed is the correlation between the housing industry and the stock market. The past fifteen years has shown how strong confidence in new home construction and stock market returns have been downright unnerving. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) housing market index both presaged the start of the post 1994 bull market and again the stock market upswing in October of 2002 (Birger, 2006).
