Gender Ideology in Shakespeare No assumptions about the origins of gender are safe, because we know absolutely nothing about how or when it originated. We only know that by the time of the earliest written records of human culture, gender ideology had gone way beyond the scientific facts of sexual dimorphism. Gender Roles were not particularly debated in Elizabethan times. They were known and accepted norms. The Patriarchal society which Shakespeare lived in was created by men, for men and about men. Predetermined societal roles restricted what women could do, be, and act. In typical Elizabethan society, men took action and responsibility and women were defenceless and powerless. Women could not act on stage, forcing young boys to play the characters of women. In this time of male dominance, Queen Elizabeth ruled the British Empire, thus creating an oxymoronic iconic female figure. How did these factors influence the writings of Shakespeare? In this essay, I will focus primarily on Twelfth Night but I shall draw comparisons with The Merchant of Venice and As You Like It. I shall......
