A Dolls House - How does the play dramatise the representation of femininity? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 play A Doll’s House was a controversial play highlighting the life of a female protagonist looking for her individuality; it portrayed women as having her own purpose and goals. The main female character Nora Helmer changes during the play finally realising that she must stop playing the role of a doll and seek out her individuality. Ibsen uses language and actions along with aspects of setting and props to show how the play dramatises the representation of femininity to make a comment on traditional stereotypes. Nora’s initial image is that of a doll wife who enjoys buying luxuries that now can be afforded, acts like a child who disobeys their parent and is very flirtatious this portrayal of Nora is very important to show how progression throughout the play. Women’s subordinate role in a relationship are emphasised through Nora’s contradictory actions. She buys cheap clothes and scrounges around for the money in contradiction to spending money on Christmas decorations; Nora defies Torvald by eating forbidden macaroons Tor: “Not even to nibble a macaroon or two......
