Andrew Johnson served as president from 1865 to 1869, and was the 17th president. Before serving as president he was elected into the house of representatives in 1835 then became a senator of Tennessee, then held military governorship of Tennessee, after it succeeded from the Union. After defeating Hannibal Hamlin in the re-election Lincoln chose Johnson as his Vice President. President Lincoln was then assassinated, and Johnson became president on April 15, 1865. During his time as president, he faced reuniting the states, after the civil war. His home state of North Carolina was rebelling against the Union, and saw Johnson as a trader, for not supporting their views. Johnson was a liberal, and thought that the nation should be ruled by the middle class. He thought that slavery should be abolished, but to a certain degree. Meaning there should be laws stating what an African American can, and can not do.
