A Knight without Armor Dr. Melvin McGinnis is a man drowning in insecurity. He tries to appear strong and come across as an average guy, but when reading Raymond Carver’s short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” the reader instead finds a frustrated, unsure man who guards himself with brashness and humor. Mel is able to maintain his façade of stability at the start of the story, but as the day’s light fades in Mel’s kitchen, so does his ability to keep himself together. Carver’s story begins with two couples sharing cheap gin at Mel McGinnis’s kitchen table. Since they have just begun to drink together, Mel is able to conduct himself in his standard manner: collected, methodical and relaxed. He is in control of the conversation they are having and is confident in the things he says. The narrator is Nick, who with his second wife Laura has joined Mel and his second wife Terry for an evening of conversation.
