moral development is the process by which children develop attitudes towards other people in society; these attitudes are based on social and cultural norms and values. Lawrence Kohlberg who was a follower of Piaget extended the work done by Piaget and believed that moral development was a slow process that evolved over time. Kohlberg claimed that there were three levels each with two stages pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional. His research involved presenting moral dilemmas to assess levels of reasoning, the most famous being the ‘Heinz’ dilemma. The aim of this essay is to evaluate with reference to gender that Kohlberg’s theory of moral development is applicable to all groups of people. This essay will look at Kohlberg’s theory also looking at different approaches to his theory those for and those against.
