Mangroves, Challenges to survival Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mangroves are an important aspect in our coastal environments. Coastal environments are some of the harshest in the world. This being said, how do mangroves survive in these tough conditions? These conditions include; low oxygen levels, movement of soil / sediment, high salinity, temperature extremes and wave/tide rotations. Mangroves are actually land plants that have developed a number of specialised adaptations that enable them to live in intertidal regions. The environment of the mangrove is very harsh: soils in which they grow are sometimes waterlogged, poorly aerated, and high in salt. These soils contain a great deal of decaying vegetable matter which creates noxious gases such as hydrogen sulphide and methane. As well, mangroves have to survive regular tidal inundation, the effects of wave action, and the effect of dramatic temperature change. Mangroves have evolved numerous adaptations to overcome their environment constraints and challenges. High salinity can be regulated by three main processes – exclusion, excretion or accumulation.
