Electromagnetic waves have potential for future communication technologies and data storage technologies. Why Digital and not Analogue? The digital revolution came about when the invention of the optical fibre and the laser. Communication through the optical fibre allows more information to be transmitted. Whereas traditionally copper-wire was used as apart of the analogue system, it sent information encoded as electrical pulses through large cables. The traditional analogue system was replaced, this because the traditional copper-wire was slower, did not transmit as much information nor as quickly. Copper-wire transmissions were also a disadvantage because the information it sent would take longer to decode than the new digital formats. Identify data sources, gather, process and present information from secondary sources to identify areas of current research and use the available evidence to discuss some of the underlying physical principles used in an application of physics related to waves.
