Poetry expresses not only certain themes or ideas but it is also influenced by concerns and beliefs of a time and place in which it was written. This is evident in the poetry of Harold Nemerov and Langston Hughes. Although written over thirty years apart, both poems have underlining ideas and concerns that were evident throughout American writing�s existence dating back to Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. These are explored through the writing styles and techniques as well as choice of language. Harold Nemerov�s �Life Cycle of the Common Man� has an easily identifiable theme that is highlighted by its own title. Simplistic in its purpose, the challenge that faced Nemerov was how to realise this theme onto the page and techniques he used to express his view. It is interesting to first examine the choice of words and initially the usage of consume(d). This gives a very strong visual to the reader, one of him taking in all these other objects without thought.
