“The Divine Wind” written by Garry Disher is a novel about friendship losed and friendship gained in Broome prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1942. The book evidently shows that only the strongest of relationships can last in a time of crisis whilst others fail when things get tough. We are able to realize who our friends are and who our enemies are. There are two successful relationships, Mitsy and Alice and Michael Penrose and Derby. Although these relationships lasted there were some that failed, such as Michael Penrose and Ida, and also Alice and Carl Venning. Some of the relationships are lasting, although they have to still endure obstacles. Hart and Mitsy have a strong friendship, at times of crisis they have discovered in themselves that they are true friends that stick side by side through anything. Although there tension was not based directly on personal basis’s but due to other factors such as the war. Hart says friendship is a slippery notion. We lose friends as we change and our friends don’t, or as we form alliances, or we betray friends or we ourselves are......
