Nicaraguas Women Fight for Freedom and Equality Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The treatment of women in Nicaragua has been anything but equal. The Somoza regime took advantage of women as though they were simply possessions or tools by using them for prostitution or middle-class maids. The National Guard owned brothels and received part of the earnings. During the Sandinista Revolution, women were an integral part of society. Several women became women’s organization leaders or Sandinista Commanders, investing their lives in the fight for women’s rights. During the war against the Contra’s, at least quarter of the Sandinista Army was female. Many females had to play both roles of homemaker and wage earner with many men in the war. The 1990’s brought better times for the women of Nicaragua. The last three Presidents, Chamorro, Aleman, and Bolanas have tried to improve women’s rights each year. Even though there are still improvements to make, women’s rights have significantly improved. Women in Nicaragua have always led a hard life.
