The setting of a novel is generally used to outline and support the plot and characters. However, Edith Wharton’s use of the setting in her classic novel Ethan Frome is an essential part of the story; it could be considered to be the most important component of the story. Every aspect of the setting is used to directly influence what happens to the characters. Wharton combines the characters deepest thoughts with physical components of the cold and rough landscape. She uses the unforgiving winter scenery to create unusually intricate characters.
Ethan Frome, the novels main character, is first introduced from the perspective of the narrator. This unnamed narrator, an engineer by trade, travels to Starkfield, Massachusetts for the winter due to a carpenters strike. Upon first seeing Ethan Frome, a crippled man, the narrator becomes curious about Frome’s accident which transformed him into a, “Ruin of a man.”(1).
