Opium War and Trading: From the Beginning to the Blast Off of Hong Kong Economy One of the reasons behind Hong Kong becoming a free trading port was because of the first opium war that occurred between 1839 and 1842. The opium war opened up more ports and gave a boost to Hong Kong¡¦s economic status. Hong Kong¡¦s economy increased due to the establishment of being a free trading port. The Opium War was presumably fought to free up trade to China. With a base in Hong Kong, merchants, traders, and opium dealers launched this city, which once was only a tiny fishing village to become the free trade center of the East. Through a widespread of addiction, a massive inflow of opium caused a massive outflow of silver. Opium is a bitter, yellowish-brown, strongly addictive illegal drug prepared from the dried juice of unripe pods of the opium poppy and containing several highly addictive narcotic alkaloids such as papaverine, codeine, and morphine. Opium is like hallucinogenic substances or epinephrine drugs, it allows people to relax and induce pleasure, but it is very addictive. ......
