The term fruit is used in the bible to describe the excretes from ones genital region, also used in the story of Adam and Eve. Eve takes the forbidden fruit from the serpent to fulfill her lust for things sweet and taboo. This is just one of the hidden meanings that Jamaica Kincaid utilizes in the poem �Girl�. I have come up with a few theories and how I have chosen to interpret this seemingly harmful poem of a young girl being taught to be proper by her caring mother. Inside this paper I will explore the metaphors and analyze the verbiage chosen by Ms. Kincaid to come up with a truly sexist, �okay for boys, never for girls� (963) poem. In the start of the poem the mood is compassionate and loving. The mother avidly repeats what is expected from the young girl in her efforts to diligently place them into her daughter�s memory, as to never be forgotten.
