Twelve angry men, a very popular play written by Reginald Rose, concerns a young boy who is the defendant in a murder case. The play debates whether he should either be sentenced to the death penalty or acquitted. His life is being put into the hands of ‘twelve angry men’.
This play cleverly establishes and maintains tension throughout. Rose uses many ways of establishing tension, yet even before we start to read the play, the cover suggests many emotions relating to the play. Tension is also established by the setting, the weather, the seating plan and the personalities of each individual Juror. He then maintains tension by the arguments, confrontations, votes, re-enactments and even his use of humour.
Even before we open the script, the cover has a big effect on the reader. The bold red stands out; this is a very passionate colour which can signify anger and danger. The writing is very bold and masculine, it is written in white which could bring in a sense of innocence or could suggest a happy ending resembling light at the end of a tunnel.
