Comparison of Beowulf and Grendel Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Gardner’s book, Grendel, is a first person view of the “Monster” Grendel. The purpose of Grendel is to show the reader a new perspective on “Good vs. Evil” perspective. He views humans as a completely objective third party. Grendel shows the readers of a classic human want, for one to find meaning its place in the world. Gardner’s book also tries is to “fill in the gaps” left by Beowulf and explain why characters did what they did and why they did them. Gardner elaborates on many of the characters and events in Beowulf and elaborates upon on. He also gives background information on the beginning of Grendel and how he became the blood hungry “animal”. In Gardner’s book, Grendel is the narrator and he defines humans by what he sees. On page 171 Grendel says, “You’re crazy.” Grendel can also see through the web of lies that humans weave and that they aren’t really as great they’re made out to be. Grendel also learned even more about humans from the all-knowing dragon. The dragon claims, "'You are mankind'."(ch.5, pp. 73) He
