In the short story flight, the Grandfather is displayed as a very strict and possessive character. Since his wife past away, he feels like he needs to control his grandchildren�s lives. He is extremely jealous when another male figure comes into the picture which is Steven, his youngest granddaughter�s boyfriend. �Waiting for Steven, hey? he said, his fingers curling like claws into his palm.� (Page 59, Line 25) He probably envies Steven because he is now the main male character in Alice�s life and it isn�t him any longer. He wants to be the one and only male that influences Alice�s life and he knows that Steven will sooner or later be the reason for her having to leave home. The Grandfather wants to have complete control of his grandchildren because they are all girls, but if they were boys, this might not have been the case. If there was a grandson in the story it would be awkward for the Grandfather to act in such a way because we normally perceive men as the more independent and stronger gender. The author probably chose for the story to consist of a Grandfather and granddaughter......
