The general meaning of freedom to Americans is doing an activity freely or living a life where you can do anything. In American history, we have had two brilliant philosophers who helped America change from slavery to freedom. Those philosophers are Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr.. Thomas Jefferson, who signed the Declaration of Independence, wanted to have a nation in which everyone could obtain freedom. Jefferson sought to keep a separate nation from the British. The new nation wanted to break free from Britain because the British violated the liberties and freedoms of the people. Martin Luther King Jr., a well known civil rights activist, sought to give African Americans the same rights as other Americans. King wanted African Americans to be free to do activities that other Americans would do in their daily lives. Jefferson and King wanted people in America to have opportunities and the freedom to live out their lives as they see fit. Jefferson and King's ideas of freedom have shaped historical events.
