While reading Spruill�s Women�s Life and Work in the Southern Colonies, I found myself back in time. I was in a time before there were cars, cell phones, and computers. It was a time before women like Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and Sarah Palin could rise to such powerful positions in a nation�s government. This was a time when the traditional role of most women was to be keeper of the home, a role that along with others would help shape the social history of our country. Spruill�s purpose for writing this book �was to find out as much as possible about the everyday life of women in the English colonies of the South�.(preface) She quotes many records, letters, newspaper articles, and advertisements, which give the colonists an avenue to speak for themselves.
