With various court decisions against Napster, recording industry claimed that Napster started a trend in peer-to-peer sharing. Napster was not the first site to allow people to download music for free. However, with more than 30 million users, it was certainly the most popular file-swapping site at its time. Napster was used primarily to distribute music from various sources, such as commercial CDs, even concerts that were illegally recorded. Given that internet practically started as individuals swapping files between shared computers, peer-to-peer file sharing is nothing new. However, with digital file-sharing technology, Napster allowed users to find information they want from any of their peers (Hoffman, 2001). Digital copies of files are perfect, fast, and in fact, free. In addition, faster internet connection, to better download multiple MP3 files and surf the Web, added to the popularity of Napster and other file-swapping software.
