Relationships between Alcohol, Tobacco and Illicit Drug Use among Young Adults Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Abstract It is widely assumed that alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs are all related, and that using one drug might lead to using another. These findings lead to the following hypothesis: as each drug use increases, the others will increase. In more specific terms: as the use of one drug increases, the use of another drug will increase. The data was taken from the results of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2005-2006. The percentage of people who reported using drugs in each state was recorded into tables. The tables were divided into three age groups: 12-17, 18-25 and 26 or older. The age group used for this study was 18-25 year-olds. After running a correlation and regression analysis among each of the three variables, the results indicate that alcohol abuse can be used to determine future use of illegal drugs. In other words, high levels of alcohol dependence can be associated with the increased use of illegal drugs. No other significant relationships were found.
