Jonathan Edwards and Ralph Waldo Emerson were; perhaps arguably, some of the most influential and persuasive writers of their time. Jonathan Edwards gained an outstanding ability to persuade his congregation that they must have a “full and constant sense of the absolute sovereignty of God, and a delight in that sovereignty,” in order to receive salvation (Edwards, 169). While Ralph Emerson wrote of nonconformity, self-reliance, and anti-institutionalism; inspiring many other significant writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These prominent men are well known for their contribution to the writings and essays of their diverse views of religion and philosophy, which is why they are often compared. Jonathan Edwards was born in 1703, to Reverend Timothy Edwards and Esther Stoddard Edwards. His grandfather, Reverend Solomon Stoddard, was also well respected and even referred to as “Pope of the Connecticut Valley”, before Jonathan was born there was no doubt he would follow in the family footsteps and become a reverend, but as a child he questioned his own faith. “From my c......
