A star can penetrate the darkness with its blinding light bringing hope to all those lost in the gloom of the night. In Bryce Courtenay�s remarkable novel, The Power of One, Peekay becomes a shining star in a very dark world plagued by racism, bigotry, and the apartheid because he is able to see human beings for who they are and not what they are, as revealed in his wise statement, �It�s not what a man does, it�s what he is that counts� (353). His ability to be accepting of the African culture is partially due to Peekay�s bond with his childhood nanny, his encounter with Hoppie Groenewald, and his mentor Doc. From these special relationships he gains the tools to construct ways on improving his life as shown through his impressive boxing career and the lives of those surrounding him, such as his determination to open a school to educate the Africans.
