What factors determine how intelligent an individual is? This question has been asked, analysed and discussed over many years. Numerous psychologists have debated whether certain behaviours or traits are either biological or environmental. This controversy is known as the �Nature versus Nurture� debate. In this essay, I will describe what intelligence is, then explore both the Nature side and Nurture side in relation to intelligence then put forward my argument that the combination of genes and environment contribute to an individuals intelligence. What is intelligence? Dictionary.com (2007) defines intelligence as having the �capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding and similar forms of mental activity, aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings and so on. It also states that being intelligent as �having good understanding or a high mental capacity, quick to comprehend, as persons or animals�.
