Commentary on The Rejected One by Morley Callaghan Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the extract from ‘The Rejected One’, the author, Morley Callaghan tells us about a young man named Karl, who is going to introduce his new girlfriend, Mamie to his family. The author illustrates the distress faced by Karl’s family members and Karl himself due to Mamie’s arrogant behavior and her vulgar dress up through his powerful imagery and strong diction. The title ‘The Rejected One’ is symbolic to the theme of rejection in the story. The rejected one in the story is Mamie since Karl’s family members find her unsuitable for Karl.
The narrator develops the plot and characters in such a way that it creates an atmosphere of suspense and tension in the extract. The narrator mentions “She was silent, as though feeling his uneasiness” without suggesting the reason for Karl’s uneasiness and Mamie’s silence immediately. Later in the passage, the reader is made aware of Mamie’s improper dress up which ends up to be the cause of Karl’s uneasiness. Thus, the author holds the reader’s interest by making the reader think ‘Why’.
