Richard III: Laurence Olivier and Ian McKellan�s Richard Richard, from the very beginning wanted nothing but the crown and would do anything to get it. Richard is a villain and he outright tells us in his opening soliloquy, �I am determined to prove a villain� (I.i.30), but he is a very charismatic and fascinating figure and for much of the play we sympathize or are impressed with him. After killing off his brothers and many others, Richard finally became king. The title of king did not bring him comfort but he continued killing anyone who posed a threat in him remaining king. The character of Richard was portrayed on film by two of the greatest Shakespearean stage actors, Laurence Olivier and Ian McKellan, and Richard is portrayed differently in each film especially in the winter of our discontent speech, the wooing of Lady Anne and a horse, a horse my kingdom for a horse scenes.
