Depression and Children When I think or hear about children and depression, I have to ask myself; how something like this could happen to a child. How do you know if a child is depressed? What causes depression in children? What are the symptoms? What can you do to help a child with this illness? As an adult we are able to say, �I feel depressed,� but a child may not recognize or understand why he or she feels sad, or be able to accurately describe how he or she feels. Children often lack the ability to verbalize their feelings. Instead, their behavior is an indication of how they feel. Sometime the symptoms of depression goes undiagnosed and untreated because they are passed off as normal emotional and psychological changes that occur during growth. Because normal behaviors vary from one childhood stage to another, it can be difficult to tell whether a child is just going through a temporary phase or is suffering from depression.
