I. Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize vicinal dihalides by brominating alkenes and determine the identity and stereochemistry of the product. Vicinal dihalides are referred to as the products obtained from alkene halogenations; two halogen substituents are attached to adjacent carbon atoms. Alkenes undergo reaction through electrophilic addition where the alkene pi bonds are replaced with two sigma (��) bonds. In alkene brominations, the pi electrons of the alkene to Br2 polarize the bromine-bromine bond, inducing bromine to act as the electrophile. Electrons then flow from the pi bond to the polarized Br2, forming a carbon-bromine bond and breaking the bromine-bromine bond, producing a bromide ion. A bromonium ion is formed as the intermediate due to the nonbonding electron pair from bromine that stabilizes the positive charge on the carbon. Next, Br- acts as the nucelopile, attacking the electron-deficient bromonium ion.
