Introduction: Hawaiian Sovereignty is a strongly debated topic. From local marches to congressional hearings, the local Sovereign movement is spreading throughout the nation. What Started as a small grassroots movement has moved onto the halls of the Senate. However, how strong is the voice of Hawaiian Sovereignty supporters? The Akaka Bill, which seeks to provide Hawaiians federal recognition similar to that of various Native American Tribes, is the biggest sovereign-related action taken by Hawaiians. Congress is currently reviewing this bill, officially known as The Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2007. United States Senator Daniel Akaka first proposed the bill in the year 2000, but since then the bill has been rewritten and resent many times. The House version of the bill was finally passed on October 24, 2007. This is a big step towards Sovereignty. However once the House signs the bill, it must be passed on to the Senate.
