The above quotation holds the opinion that people must be selfish and cater to self-interest in others in order to be successful in the Victorian �social system.� When applied to both Hard Times and to our own society, this statement�s pessimistic views are applicable, and do hold true when analyzing not only characters from the novel, but human culture in general.
