A Beneficial Egotism “I beg your pardon for interrupting you, sir,” returned Bitzer; “but I am sure you know that the whole social system is a question of self-interest. What you must always appeal to, is a person’s self-interest. It’s your only hold. We are so constituted. I was brought up in that catechism when I was very young, sir, as you are aware.” Hard Times, by Charles Dickens, is the tragic tale of Victorian society’s misplaced utilitarian philosophies and the consequential mechanization of human beings. The above quotation holds the opinion that people must be selfish and cater to self-interest in others in order to be successful in the Victorian “social system.” When applied to both Hard Times and to our own society, this statement’s pessimistic views are applicable, and do hold true when analyzing not only characters from the novel, but human culture in general. The proof of Bitzer’s statement is reflected in himself because he, as a character, is self-interested and egocentric, but also very successful in Coketown society.
