After the American Revolution, an immense sense of national consciousness emerged. Americans, mainly politicians, believed that for their country to be independent, a language peculiar to the inhabitants of the newly-born nation must exist. Changes in the English vocabulary were stimulated by certain influential American politicians� nationalistic voices, calling for uniqueness, and by Webster�s significant legacy. Patriotic American voices strived for making their language a distinct one, either by setting new linguistic changes or congressional proposals. Famed for his papers on the English language in the Pennsylvania Journal, John Witherspoon calls for the consideration of a standard which would be recognized in America. Witherspoon strongly disapproves the imitation of Great Britain both in its way of speaking and of rejecting old pronunciations.
