The idea of human suffering in Dante Alighieri�s Divine Comedy was first presented to its readers through the process of recompense of souls in Inferno of their sins. The designation of souls depending on their sins is shown through different circles. The deeper the circle, the graver the sin, therefore, the souls in the circles that are located in the deepest parts experience more torture than the others. The second part, Purgatoio, however, manifests a different idea of human suffering. It introduces a concept of suffering which will eventually lead to something good, which is Heaven. The purpose of human suffering in Purgatorio is to direct oneself to goodness to attain the ultimate goal of man. The ultimate goal of man is happiness through being in the Heaven with God. In the second journey of Dante to another world, Purgatorio, is a place where the sins of the souls are purged or cleansed. Dante mentioned in the first Canto that the sins of the souls must be washed out in Purgatorio before ascending into Heaven (Alighieri, Purgatorio Canto1 lines 4-6, lines 64-66). Suff......
