Tone can be interpreted in many ways. In Charles Lamb’s letter to William Wordsworth, Lamb uses tone to decline Wordsworth’s invitation to move further west. Because readers can interpret tone differently, it is no stretch to say that Lamb demonstrates several tones in his letter. These tones can be discerned throughout the letter, providing a message that could be viewed in numerous ways.
Lamb takes advantage of personification in his letter to express his multi faceted tone. Lamb writes, “The Lighted shops… life awake.” He uses the word “awake” to describe the streets of London and life itself. This emphasizes how dear he holds the bustling city life and gives it London a living quality. London, to Lamb, is alive. It is awake “at all hours of the night” with “the impossibility of being dull in Fleet Street.” This device could be perceived as a reflection, or simply a thoughtful digression from his initial point.
