Destiny Won�t Allow It In Michael Cunningham�s novel Specimen Days, the leading character�s relationship in all three chapters fails to work. The chapters show this relationship in past, present, and future scene. One possibility that would explain why they fail is that destiny or a curse intervenes. The bowl may be a curse to their relationship. Both ways Whitman is a strong influence in these chapters and his ideas are produced in each chapter. In the first chapter, Catherine and Simon�s relationship is doomed to fail at the beginning. Catherine told Lucas that she is a whore (Cunningham 69). She knows what she had been putting Simon through, but it doesn�t seem to bother her that Simon isn�t the only man in her life. (Cunningham 69). She uses him as if she doesn�t want a real love relationship but rather just to have the comfort of having a man by her side. Catherine knew that she and Simon would never have the long lasting kind of love. When Simon dies she doesn�t have much of a legacy to leave behind with him. She starts to feel bad because of the fact that she knew it wasn......
